About Sigurd Skogestad

I have been Professor of Chemical Enginering at NTNU in Trondheim since 1987, and since January 1999 I am Head of Department of Chemical Engineering ( kjemisk prosessteknologi ). The Department is the result of recent merger (1999) of the former sister Departments of kjemiteknikk and industriell kjemi . The Department is in a period of big changes because about two thirds of the academic staff is over 60 years.

I am also busy with teachning. In the autumn I teach a course on introduction to chemical engineering. I have written a new textbook in Prosessteknikk (Tapir, 2000) for this course. (I am considering writing an English edition.)

Every autumn I use to teach the process control course for the 4th year students, but this year (2000) John Morud is giving the course. I have also since 1989 given a Ph.D. course in multivariable control in the Control Department, based on my book with Ian Postlethwaite (Wiley, 1996) , However, the course was given for the last time in spring 1999, and it will be replaced by an advanved undergarduate course given by Professor Morten Hovd. Our engineering degree is changing from a 4.5 year program to a 5 year program (first class started in 1997 and finishes in 2002) and we plan to offer some new advanced process control courses starting in 2001.

Unfortunately, my research has suffered a bit lately, but this is my main interest, and I have a group of about 9 Ph.D. students. I am also the Head of PROST - which is the strong point center in process systems engineering in Trondheim - and involves about 50 people in various departments.

I used to head the University committee for engineering Ph.D. study (dr.ing), but this and many other committees disappeared when the University administration was reorganized. I am the chair of "NTHs fond" which annually gives about 1 million NOK for dr.ing. students to attend conferences. And I am the leader of something called Professorforum at the university.
