Sebastian Engell receives the 2023 Nordic Process Control Award. The Nordic Process Control Award is given for lasting and significant contributions to the field of process control. The 19th recipient of the Nordic Process Control Award is Professor Sebastian Engell from the Technical University of Dortmund, who receives the award in recognition of his work on model-based optimization and control of processes under uncertainty. The Nordic Working Group on Process Control particularly recognizes Professor Engells work on Multi-Stage Model Predictive Control. The Working Group also recognizes his efforts in shaping the future of process control in the context of the European Research landscape, as coordinator of several EU research projects, and impacting the policies of H2020 and Horizon Europe. His impact continues to extend into industry and academia as he has graduated 80+ PhD researchers. The award was presented to Professor Engell during the 24th Nordic Process Control Workshop held in Trondheim in Norway on 17th of August 2023. The title of Professor Engell's inspiring award lecture was “The current challenges in the process industries and how optimization and control contribute to meeting them”.
