733b Planning Parent Seed Production

Matt H. Bassett, Dow AgroSciences, 9330 Zionsville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46268

Parent seed production involves the process of selecting and bulking up inbred (parent) seed in sufficient quantities to produce hybrid seed for sale to customers. Given the large number of inbreds being screened yearly to support the ever-increasing number of hybrids being sold, it was determined that a model was needed to track the whole production process. This talk will present a mixed-integer linear program that was developed to model the parent seed production process within Dow AgroSciences. Specific details of our actual inbreds and hybrids will not be discussed, but issues involving data collection/generation, model formulation, model solution, and interpretation of the results will be discussed.
