Hot-water extraction of woody biomass produces a wood extract that is rich in hemicelluloses or xylan and other carbohydrates and extractives. This extracts are excellent feedstock for the production of biobutanol. Clostridium berjinckii is used as the fermentor grown in an anaerobic environment. It is found that the present hot-water extract production technique is adequate for the production of butanol.
