458e Decision-Making In Biopharmaceutical Process Design

Charles Siletti and Demetri Petrides. INTELLIGEN, INC., 700 Walton Ave., Mount Laurel, NJ 08054

Objectives and constraints in biopharmaceutical design often differ from those associated with the design of large scale chemical processes. The choices of unit operations are more limited and operating conditions must frequently be determined experimentally. Time to market may outweigh process optimization as an objective. This presentation will explore case studies for several key design decisions including: fed-batch vs. continuous perfusion for cell culture, disposable vs. fixed storage vessels, and process scale and batch size.
