The nondispersive membrane solvent extraction technique was developed in the early eighties. It is now being used in a number of large-scale commercial installations. In the very late eighties this technique was explored for heavy metal extractions as well. The nineties saw a very large number of laboratory scale studies and a number of pilot scale studies continuing into the early part of this decade. This talk will illustrate this technique for extraction as well as recovery of various toxic heavy metals. The strengths and weaknesses of this technique will be pointed out. Other related techniques developed will be illustrated as well along with a few larger-scale exploitations.
