58g Facilitating Interdisciplinary Learning through Incorporation of Biotech Applications

Claire Komives, Chemical and Materials Engineering, San Jose State University, 1 Washington Sq., San Jose, CA 95192-0082

To address the need to incorporate interdisciplinary course content in the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum, a website of solved material and energy balance problems dealing with biological applications has been created. In addition, to facilitate faculty who have not had formal training in biotechnology, a workshop for faculty was delivered in Summer '07. Problems from the website were used at beta test sites in Fall '07 and again in Fall '08. Plans are underway for the expansion of the website to include all of the core undergraduate curriculum. The presentation will describe the website utility and design for expansion.
