479c The Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies

David H. Gay, Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-5100

The ICB is a uniquely interdisciplinary alliance of academia, industry and the Army. Led by the University of California, Santa Barbara, in collaboration with MIT, Caltech, industry partners and the Army, the ICB transforms biological inspiration into technological innovation.

Inspired by the study of the amazing processes, structures and features found in nature and biology, ICB research teams develop revolutionary technological innovations in: bio-inspired materials and lightweight portable energy; biomolecular sensors; bio-inspired energy-dispersive composites; biodiscovery tools; bio-inspired network science; and cognitive neuroscience.

The ICB is by name and by design an intensely collaborative endeavor that is focused on technology transition in close partnership with Army and industry researchers. The presentation will discuss the challenges encountered, the synergies realized, and the lessons learned during the first five years of operation of the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies.
