619a Regulation and Societal Considerations of Nanotechnology in Commerce

With an estimated 600 consumer products on the market containing nanomaterials, protection of human health and the environment is becoming a paramount consideration. Environmental, occupational health, and consumer protection laws are coming under close scrutiny to determine whether each are appropriate methods for regulating the widespread use of nanomaterials. In addition, support businesses, such as insurance companies, and consumer safety organizations are also releasing information concerning the impacts and considerations surrounding nanotech. This presentation will provide an overview of how the major regulatory schemes at all levels of government are addressing the unique and new concerns raised by nanotechnology in commerce. In addition, ethical and societal considerations concerning the use of nanotechnology in a time of limited information concerning the impacts of such materials, including reactions by insurance companies and public interest groups, will be discussed as well.
