Abstract

In this paper, a new intelligent cruise control (ICC) system is designed to provide better transient performance than existing ones during traffic disturbances. Based on a simplified longitudinal vehicle model, stability properties are established for a general variable time headway. Simulations with validated nonlinear vehicle model are conducted to demonstrate our analysis is valid and the ICC vehicle works in a safe and comfortable manner. It is also demonstrated that the proposed ICC system has better impact on fuel economy and pollution than existing ones during traffic disturbances.
